The Pro-Class Autocalves for practice and clinic

Class B Pro-Class autoclaves are available in a wide range of models. The variety of the chamber sizes - choose from 17 litres, 22 litres and even 29 litres - ensures efficient and safe steam sterilization.

With a 60 cm chamber depth, Vacuklav 24 BL+ permits the sterilization of especially long instruments such as endoscopes.

Available as both a fixed water and stand-alone solution, Pro-Class autoclaves can be deployed in a range of installation situations: The integrated water tank of the stand-alone devices means that they can be installed anywhere in the decontamination room irrespective of the location of the water connection.

The stand-alone and the fixed water autoclaves can also be connected to the water supply (water connection set and a MELAdem water treatment unit required) to enable automatic operation.

Pro-Class steam sterilizers have the optimal specifications for steam sterilization in an ENT practice and clinic. Easy to operate and with short sterilization cycles, Vacuklav autoclaves also permit a number of different methods of documentation.

ENT practices and clinics use a wide range of instruments. They often use hollow body instruments with narrow lumen such as ENT aspirators. International regulations specify that this type of instrument must be decontaminated in a Class B autoclave. Class B steam sterilization deploys repeated fractionation to evacuate air from the chamber and hollow body instruments. This ensures reliable sterilization of all instruments used in an ENT context.

Critical instruments (medical devices which are applied to penetrate skin or mucosa) must be wrapped and then sterilized. In an ENT context, this involves instruments used for paranasal sinus surgery or surgery of the middle and inner ear. We recommend that ENT practices classify all their instruments in accordance with their area of application and structure and record the results in a hygiene plan.

Instrument Decontamination in ENT Practice

 

Documentation and approval of the sterilization process provides maximum legal certainty. The Class B Pro-Class autoclaves are fitted with an integrated interface for documentation of the decontamination process. Save all decontamination reports and log files on a CF card via MELAflash or on the practice computer via MELAnet Box.

The instruments can also be labelled and issued with approval by hand via a documentation sheet and the MELAdoc label printer.

Routine inspections of autoclaves

MELAG recommendation for routine operation of Class B sterilizers

We recommend that you perform regular routine checks of your Class B autoclave to ensure its value-retention, durability and continued safe function. Please comply with the hygiene standards in your country:

 

Weekly routine inspection:

Perform a weekly vacuum test on the autoclave. The vacuum test checks Class B sterilizers for leaks. Always perform the test with a cold, dry and unloaded device. The vaccum test is passed if the leakage rate is lower than 1.3 mbar. You can read-off the leakage rate on the display or from the log files.

Practical tips for the vacuum test:

✓ The vacuum test is best performed in the morning, just after switching on the autoclave, when it is completely cool. This ensures reliable measurements.

 

Daily routine inspection:

We recommend a daily visual check of the door seal and the door lock, together with checks of the power supply, feed water and (where present) the water connection as well as the documentation media (printer paper, computer and network). Modern MELAG autoclaves are fitted with a comprehensive process documentation system, which checks for the requisite sterilization conditions before the program start.

Practical tips for cleaning the autoclaves:​

✓ Cleaning the chamber, door seal and tray mount adds to the quality assurance. This requires that you switch off the steam sterilizer and disconnect the power plug from the socket. Clean the cold sterilization chamber with a soft, non-fuzzing cloth. The majority of the deposits or impurities can be removed with cleaning alcohol or spirit. Neutral fluid cleaner is recommended to clean the door seal.

Helix test body for the batch-control of a Class-B steam sterilization

 

Batch-related routine test:

The steam must reach all the surfaces and hollows of the instruments to ensure complete sterilization. The air evacuation from the hollow bodies of the instruments required for this process is checked by a helix test body working in accordance with international standards. Even a minimal volume of residual air will prevent an incorrect colour change in the indicator strips of the helix test body. Please document the success of batch control, so you do not need to retain the used helix test body indicator strips.

As a helix test body is especially suited to testing the sterilization of hollow body instruments, the test body should be included in every sterilization batch containing instruments with narrow lumen.

MELAG provides two reliable systems for batch control with a helix test body: MELAcontrol Helix is a test body to be disposed after 250 sterilization batches. MELAcontrol Pro is a long-term test body which ensures economical sterilization processes. This helix test body can also be used after 250 sterilization batches; you will only require replacement indicator strips.

Batch control of solid instruments can also be performed with a type 5 process indicator. The MELAG type 5 process indicators comply with the requirements of international standards.

Practical tips for using the test body: ​

✓ Optimal sterilization conditions must be ensured throughout the entire chamber of a Class B autoclave. This permits deployment of the test body in every point in the sterilization chamber. Please make sure that the aperture of the test body is not covered by sterilization film packaging.
